Date: Saturday, August 7, 2010
Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm
Location: SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City Philippines.

Graphika Manila International Multimedia Design Conference is the premier multimedia and graphic design event in the Philippines. Since 2006, Graphika Manila has attracted over 5000 design students and professionals and is now hailed as one of the most influential multimedia art events in the country. As it celebrates its fifth year running, Graphika Manila once more brings together Manila's creative minds to listen to inspiring stories from and celebrate the works of the best multimedia and graphic designers from the Philippines and from around the globe. Simply put it as a creative symposium with speakers from different fields of the creative arts. The conference focuses on the creative side of design, rather than technology.

Graphika Manila has been instrumental in bringing in some of the industry's most respected professionals as well as world-renowned companies, to share their experiences in multimedia and design.

This year's speakers include: Tara McPherson, Danny Yount, Phunk Studio, Underground Logic, Cynthia & Arnold Arre, & Rocketsheep Post.

Get your tickets now! Early Bird Rates end July 11, 2010.

A School for Filipino Artists Living in Poverty

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 14, 2009, 6:33 AM

Let's Build a Design School for Filipino Artists Living in Poverty!

Watch the Kickstarter video here.

We're starting a design school for Filipinos who can't afford college. We have property already, and an architect has designed us an incredible building that includes bunk rooms for students and volunteers who live too far away and wouldn't otherwise be able to attend our school. But we need your help.

We aim to provide excellent graphic design and art education for young adults who can’t afford typical schooling. Working with other passionate professionals in our field, we'll help Filipino artists living in poverty learn the tools of the trade, experience client work, build beautiful portfolios, and get good careers in the design industry.

At Ferdinand Center for the Creative, students will come to classes three days a week, gaining practical, hands-on experience drawing what they see, drawing from their imagination, sketching, painting in different styles and mediums, working on logos from conception to final execution, and learn the tools and software used by graphic designers. They’ll get to work on actual ad campaigns and brand projects for other nonprofits around the world as well, adding valuable work to their portfolios.

We’ll offer all the education, tools, and resources so that even the poorest can enrich their lives and earn a better living with good jobs in the graphic design field.

We’re looking to use our facilities in any way we can, to help as many people as possible. One of our projects, Kalye Ferdinand (Ferdinand Street in Filipino), aims to help street children learn to read and write, speak English, play around with arts and crafts, and learn basic computer skills all while getting a healthy meal. Solving the literacy problem goes a huge way towards solving the rest of the world’s problems, and it gives street children a head start against educated children, who already have a head start in every other way.

Project location: Manila, Philippines

Every little bit of help counts. For more info how to support our initiative, click here.

WYD video interview on Vimeo!

WYD (Why You Do What You Do) is a 3-5 minute show every Saturday that aims to inspire and motivate YOU to do what YOU want to do. The show does this by featuring artists, entrepreneurs and organizations that have transformed an idea into reality out of their passion for a certain craft. WYD believes in the intersection of YOUR passion and social responsibility.

Shameless plug! I mix in some Filipino words but the interview's mostly English haha! Check it, also check the Commune Manila blog for awesome stuff.

Update, bitches

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 30, 2008, 1:57 AM
This'll be my last journal entry for a while, been very busy lately, and A LOT has happened since I really updated my journal, well save for shameless self-promotion HAHA.

October of last year I got out of Team Manila, after that I went to the US. I'll probably upload a compilation of my TM works here, if my old bosses permit it.

US was boring so I freelanced while I was there, then met a lot of fellow artsy fartsy pussbags via Emptees - a tee design burlesque snuggery, or whatever it is. Soon after I found the tee medium to be somewhat appealing ergo I dropped web design altogether. Joined some contests, unluckily got ripped, luckily won a bunch of stuff.

Collaborated with everyone too, with tons of collabs still in the works. Will finish soon though. Then did some crazy uploading see: spamming last Jan-Feb, got my third Daily Dev on the cute wallpaper thing some days ago. Though late, much thanks to archanN the feature!

After 4 months out, I came back to the Philippines. I still wanted to be full-time freelancer (if that makes any sense) but a 7-month old job offer resurfaced, so I took the job of Senior Designer at US Auto Parts Network (Philippines) Corporation, errrr an internet marketing / web-related job. Yeah, back to web design, eww. Haha.

So now it's back to WordPress templates, banner ads, icons, web 2.0 ish blah blah. But it turns out that the job is fun, people there are awesome, plus I missed regular monthly salary HAHA.

I still do illustrations though on my spare time. Lots of greenlit side-projects -- working on identity/branding and some collaterals for Graphika Manila 08, designs and merchandise for Panic! At the Disco / Cobra Starship, some top secret stufffff, plus a bunch of freelancing for independent clothing stores and small bands. Shit I'm out of coffee.
